La cinta japonesa "El niño y la garza", del maestro japonés Hayao Miyazaki, ganó el premio Oscar a la Mejor Película Animada, en la 96 edición de los premios de la Academia de Hollywood.

Este es el segundo filme de habla no inglesa en toda la historia capaz de ganar en la categoría, tras 'Spirited Away' (2001), también de Studio Ghibli y Miyazaki.

El director japonés no asistió a la gala porque, según revelaron sus compañeros de equipo antes de la ceremonia, se tomará "un descanso" tras la consecución de esta cinta.

El resto de producciones que competían en este apartado eran "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,Elemental" y "Nimona".
